The property is a GEM! I booked it as a getaway for my wife and I for our anniversary but would definitely book again and bring some family and friends along! Has all the amenities to entertain all ages! Plus, unlike other properties along the same road, offers a decent amount of space outside for activities and a trail to the river. Only cons would be there aren’t many places around for food or what not but the property has everything you need to prepare meals just have to provide the food. So plan ahead and bring meals and snacks

Amazing Vacation

We absolutely loved this cabin. At first we thought the gps was taking us the wrong way, when we passed over the little bridge lol. But when we arrived at the cabin, it was breathtaking. Sitting up on the hill overlooking the mountains... beautiful. The cabin was very accommodating for everyone. We had an amazing vacation and we spent many hours on the deck, enjoying the view. We brought my in laws with us, first time they have ever been to Ashe County. My father-in-law suffered a massive stroke in 2020 so we were looking for a place that was easy access for him to move around. He took it slow getting up the steps to front door but once he was inside everything was right there for him on the main floor. They loved it and can’t wait to come back. They said it was the best vacation they have ever been on. And the most beautiful cabin they have ever seen. Sadly my father-in-law had another stroke 3 weeks ago and has been in rehab to learn how to walk again. I am so Thankful we were able to have this vacation together and make memories. He is determined to come back to the cabin. He keeps saying in August. We are keeping positive. Looking forward to coming back to Ashe soon. Hoping to bring my parents next time as well.

Our weekend in this lovely cabin was just what we had hoped for. The cabin was laid out perfectly for our family. This cabin has the best view of any cabin we have previously stayed in. It was so restful to just go on the deck, rock, and view God's handiwork in nature. We definitely recommend this one!

This was such a wonderful vacation home! The house was super clean and beautifully decorated for Christmas. The pictures really don’t do the house justice—such a gorgeous home! We loved having two living spaces for hanging out and playing games. Great location in the mountains with a short drive to the grocery store and to downtown West Jefferson. Can’t recommend enough—we would love to come back!

We all enjoyed the cabin. We played lots of football, arcade games, board games, card games, watched some DVD movies and live TV sports and movies as well. I would caution other renters that the kitchen only has salt and pepper, the bathrooms only have soap (no shampoo, conditioner, lotion, makeup remover toilettes), and there was only enough laundry detergent for one load. We ended up having to make another 25 minute drive into Boone to get some of these items.

Wonderful vacation. The float on the New River was fun. We went to Todd for that using Rivergirl Fishing Co. My only issue with the entire process was the cleaning fee and then the contract that said I could only leave 1 load of dirty laundry or I would be charged more. There was no mention of the fee I would be charged per load of dirty laundry. Cleaning Fee is too high if I have to wash all the sheets and towels. I'm glad I planned on staying an extra night. I had one entire afternoon to wash all the sheets and towels. Then the only laundry left was from the bed my husband and I slept in and our towels. There is no way I could have done all the laundry and checked out by 10 am. This is not my first vbro rental where this has happened so it must routine in the vrbo world. The house was great and the vacation great.

Great Mother’s Day Getaway

I booked this cabin to escape to a new location for what would have been a painful Mother’s Day. My mother had passed away 2 month’s prior. I didn’t want me nor my family to be at home for Mother’s Day. My sons, my granddaughter and her mother met me, my husband and my dad there. We were so surprised at the beauty of this modern cabin. It was clean, well stocked, spacious, and secluded with great views. The beds were comfortable. Driving to the cabin was, about 3/4 of a mile on private roads. Initially, I was thinking “where in the world have I booked this cabin?”. After the first time, it was not a problem.
My 4 yo granddaughter enjoyed all the books and games the home was stocked with. Us adults enjoyed the views and the fire pit. My sons did hike down to the river which wasn’t as close as I had thought it would be. The name is right on. It is over the River but with wonderful views. They have bird feeders out. We saw beautiful birds and even a couple of deer. While cooking breakfast the first morning (which my mom and I normally did together on family trips), I saw the most beautiful cardinal out the kitchen window. It was very soothing as if the cardinal was a sign of approval of how we decided to spend Mother’s Day. We will definitely rent this cabin again. Maybe even next Mother’s Day. 😉

It was supposed to be a kayak trip but kids got on the river and a big storm came. The house was roomy and very clean. The rain couldn't be helped so we made the best of it. Had a great time!

The cabin was clean and beautifully furnished with plenty of room for the four adults and 5 children in our group. Plenty of games for the children were available and the fire pit and hammock were appreciated too. The views are outstanding.

Lovely cabin, frustrating cleaning expectations for guests

We had a lovely stay at the cabin. It was very comfortable and we were well placed to explore the attractions of the area. A few comments:

1.When we arrived with three tired kids, it was SUPER frustrating to have to make up the beds, as the only ones that were made were the MB and the double bed on the main floor. Our reservation was for 5 adults and 3 kids - we needed all the beds. Housekeeping should have made them before we arrived.

2.Asking your guests to basically do all the linen laundry before they leave is a bit much. We had to cram into beds the last night so that we could begin washing sheets and towels the night before we left (as we had to leave at 8am). It is the management company's responsibility to clean the sheets - otherwise, how can you be sure guests actually did it? Additionally, the house was filled with cobwebs and dog hair. What did we pay a cleaning fee for?

3. The gas logs downstairs should be checked. After turning them on, the entire house smelled of gas and the couple who stayed downstairs got sick to their stomach.

Great Cabin in West Jefferson

Three families with 6 adults and 7 children had a fantastic three day weekend at Over the River. The view is outstanding and the cabin feels secluded while being less than 20 minutes from a grocery store and great hikes. The room with the bunk beds was a huge hit with our kids and we loved time on the huge deck. A couple suggestions to keep improving the location: please add more furniture on the deck. While the house sleeps a large number there were only a couple chairs and a table on the deck. There was also a considerable water leak and ceiling damage in the downstairs bathroom. Finally, please update the check out directions as when reading the ones posted in the cabin we thought we had to wash all the linens before leaving, and that is NOT the case. Finally some chairs for the outdoor fire pit area would be nice. A HUGE plus was customer service. Our hot water went out on Sunday morning and in no time they had a propane tanker out to refill our tank. We were very impressed by the quick service. Overall we loved this house. With three floors and nice, spacious common areas we had plenty of room to spread out and play games. Our party had a lot of fun fishing down at the river, too!

We loved our stay at this property and will come back again. This was the most well taken care of property we could have found. The owner has everything you can think of and then some. Looks brand new. Excellent deck, firepit setting and views. We hiked down to the river and enjoyed a swim.

Awesome weekend getaway

We had 2 families at the house and had a wonderful weekend. There is a bunk room with games and books and lots of entertainment for kiddos. The wifi was great, and we brought our apple tv to stream. There is a large property and the fire pit was so fun. We did try to walk down to the river, but it was steep. The house was clean and had everything we needed for cooking. The beds were comfortable. The road coming up is a dirt road, but we did not have any difficulty accessing the house. It has wonderful views and we saw some gorgeous sunsets. Definitely would recommend this property.

Our family took a few days just to get away. Home was very well maintained, clean, up to date and plenty of room to gather and spend a little quiet time if needed. Our grandchildren enjoyed all the books, movies and space to cuddle along with having their own room. We will return to this lovely home. Awesome views with open spaces . Only negative is no hot tub just large jacuzzi tub in master.

Over the River is a beautiful, well-kept cabin. It had plenty of space for our family. We loved how it was decorated for Christmas when we visited for Thanksgiving. We stayed for a week and never got bird even with the circumstance our world is in right now. There was everything you would need to have an enjoyable stay. I bought our portable traeger grill and the lean to near picnic table was covered to stay out of the weather, and to enjoy a nice cold beverage while grilling. Dont hesitate to rent this place it is close to West Jefferson center and 30 minutes from Boone Thanx again. Oh and contacted rental management company as a layer of glass was broken on door but it wasnt unsafe by any means and they were quick to respond and let us know they were waiting for it to arrive . head to the mountains !!!!!

The home was beautiful and clean for our stay. The views were amazing. Perfect place to relax. You couldn't see or access the river from the property but there are lots off access pointed near by through the state park system. The property management was easy to get in touch with. There was a leak in the master bathroom so we were unable to use the tub or shower upstairs.

We had a wonderful time staying in this cabin. There were 6 adults and a lab. The space was perfect for us. The cabin was extremely clean! The guys enjoyed walking down the mountain to fish in the river. We enjoyed using the fire pit and roasting marshmallows. The location is convenient to West Jefferson with many neat little restaurants and shopping. I would stay here again!

This is a beautiful and immaculately clean house. Roomy and comfortable with killer views. The only thing is tthe road leading up the mountain to the house - the gravel
and dirt single car width Rustic Road. Scary. Especially in the rain. Or at night. This is a good house to go to and stay rather than travel anywhere else.

My family (4 adults, 3 kids) spent a weekend here. This cabin was perfect for our needs...clean, comfortable, neat and orderly. The two living areas were great. The kids loved the toys, games and books their room supplied. I loved the cuckoo clock. The kitchen provided everything needed to cook our meals. Although the river can't be seen from the cabin this time of year, the mountain views from the main living area, kitchen and deck are beautiful. I watched the sun rise over the mountain every morning.
The drive up the paved/gravel road was easy with a front wheel drive vehicle.....a little tricky at times because you couldnt see if another vehicle was coming around the corner, but not really a problem.
Working with Carolina Mountain Properties is always such a joy. They are friendly and helpful and make the whole process easy. They are our 'go to' people whenever we rent in this area.
The only downside to this cabin is space availability for personal belongings. In my room there was an owner's closet and dresser drawer that was inaccessible, which is typical of rentals. But they offered no space for my clothes to be placed. The remaining drawers were filled with stuff and there was no place for my suitcase except the floor. I used the window curtain rod to hang some of my things, and brought in two chairs from the kids room to place my suitcase
on. No big deal, but an empty drawer and some hooks on the wall for hanging things would be nice.
The only mirrors are above the bathroom sinks. Again, no big deal but women like to see more than just their face when getting dressed.
There were no posted departure instructions. We are repeat renters with Carolina Mountain so we know what is expected of us upon checkout. But if were we first time renters, we would have been clueless.
Our overall stay was wonderful and peaceful and comfortable. We would recommend Over the River to our friends.

The only amenity that I would desire would be a hot tub. We also spent a lot of time on the porch and we needed 4 more rocking chairs so we could rock together as a family. The driveway is very steep. My front wheel drive made it up but scraped the bottom of my car. An AWD or 4WD would work best.

This cabin was beautiful! Plenty of room and parking was great! Little disappointed that it was not in walking distance to river. No problem. I would like to see instructions posted on how to use TV's. Did not understand why ice maker was not operable with such a nice refrigerator in cabin. Beautiful views, the cabin was really clean, lots of room in the cabin. There was no service for cell phones, we did finally get our laptops and cell phones to connect to the internet. I recommend a calling card to have in case of an emergency. Love the place, will stay there again.

Loved the cabin. The pictures do not do it justice! Beautiful view and set up. We will definitely stay here again. Only set back was hundreds of dead ants in lower bunk bed closest to window. I was afraid to let any of the children sleep on that side. Not sure why they weren't cleaned up before our arrival. They were very noticeable. However, none of the children were bitten and we didn't seem to notice any live ants during our stay. Recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Driveway has ruts that need to be filled. It was hard to get some of our vehicles up. I promise you will love this place.

This cabin is so pretty, clean and well keep we all had such a great time and feel the pictures you have posted do do justice the cabin is so much better then the pictures show. The only this is wow what a I ride up the mountain that's crazy and we did get stuck right at the driveway where the grey rocks are.

The cabin is absolutely beautiful with a great view. Very quiet and private. There were A LOT of dead ants around the cabin and when we arrived, the front door was wide open. We were sent directions to the wrong rental (surprise other renters!) but the property manager was very responsive after hours, answered quickly and rerouted us in no time at all. Still a pain as it was 20 minutes away. This would be a great house for multiple families as the setup was great. We enjoyed it perfectly with our family of four. I would suggest a car with all wheel drive to navigate the driveway.

As other reviewers have noted, a vehicle with 4WD or at least traction control is very helpful for navigating the final 1.1 miles of Rustic road. It's gravel, winding, and there are several spots where a sedan would spin or struggle. The home itself is awesome. All the beds, linens, and appliances were great. We weren't able to get the gas fireplace working downstairs.

We had a wonderful stay at Over The River for 2 nights. The road in is as others have described but we had all wheel drive vehicles and it was dry so we had no problems. It was very clean and well equiped. The only kitchen suggestion would be a simpler coffee maker with more volume. Also you should let renters know that the grill is hookedinto the house LP gas tank so they know not to bring a tank. It fit our needs very well. We had 5 adults and 2 children and felt very comfortable and not crowded. It was peaceful and we enjoyed the fire ring. Folks should know that the river is not close enough to walk to. Over all we were satisfied with our accomadations.

Love the cabin and views. Great place to get away with couples and/or friends. The only "mark" against it is the river isn't exactly right there. It's called "Over the River" for literal reasons. Still plan on going back next year.

Beautiful cabin. Spacious and has all the luxuries of home. The only issue we had was getting into the driveway. The extra rain has washed away the gravel and made it very difficult to get up the drive. Other than that, it was perfect.

We enjoyed a lot at this rental property, will definitely plan again. Few highlights:
1. I have never experienced such an awesome internet service in any of the rentals I have been. Internet connectivity is awesome.
2. View from the Deck is breath taking.
3. River is not that far away. Must visit the beautiful river about a mile away.
4. Have all the new equipment like Gas stove, Refrigerator, Music system, samsung Tv, apple routers.

Over all stay is an awesome experience.
Few things need to replaced
1. The water pipe at the entrance with jet os broken.
2. Gas grill was very dirty
3. There should be more trash cans outside or we should have bigger one
